George Lee Smith, 88, of Kingsport, passed away Wednesday evening, December 22, 2010 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness with emphysema. Lee was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Company after 42 years of service and was an avid farmer. He served in the U.S. Army, South Pacific during World War II. Lee was also a faithful charter member of Fall Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Smith; infant son, Johnny Smith; two brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Lottie Fleenor Smith of Kingsport; children: Geri Smith Strong of Kingsport, George Smith and wife, Sandra of Johnson City, Linda Smith Phillips of Kingsport, Jackie Smith of Kingsport, Peggy Smith Dempsey and husband, Bobby of Piney Flats, Janet Smith Collins and husband, Terry of Gray; two step-children: Lisa Fleenor Ogletree and husband, Phillip of Nashville, Jimmy Fleenor and wife, Angie of Kingsport; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great granddaughters; seven step-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; one sister, Mayme "Aunt Jim" Pecktol of Blountville; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff on the 3rd floor at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center for their loving care.
The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport. Services will begin at 5:00 p.m. with Rev. Tommy Haynes officiating.
Military graveside rites will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday at East Lawn Memorial Park by the American Legion Posts 3/265. Those planning to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:50 p.m.
