George W. Yokley, 85, Kingsport, died Wednesday, November 16, 2011. He was born in Jearoldstown, Greene County and had lived in Kingsport for the past 56 years. George served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines and Japan. His decorations and citations included the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Army of Occupation Medal Japan.
He was employed in the Composing Room at Kingsport Times News for 35 years before retiring in 1988. George and his wife Peggy owned and operated Kingsport Typesetting for 15 years. He was a member of Glen Alpine United Methodist Church where he served on various committees.
George enjoyed refurbishing antique radios and was a ham radio operator. He was a member of the V.F.W.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lura and George Yokley.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Yokley of Kingsport; daughter, Beverly Yokley of Piney Flats; son, Phillip Yokley and wife, Pam of Houston, TX; four grandchildren, Moss Sanders, James Yokley, Angela Yokley and Natalie Yokley; sister, Selma Nicholson of Morristown and a faithful donkey, Jerry.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 21, 2011 from 5-7:00 p.m. at Glen Alpine United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Dale Gilbert officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military rites being conducted by American Legion Posts 3/265.
