Georgia Ruth Nickels

Georgia Ruth Osborne Nickels, 92, of Kingsport, Tenn., ended her earthly journey on Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Wexford House, Kingsport.

She was born on September 18, 1920, in Dungannon, Va., and graduated from Dungannon High School in 1937; but for the lack of funds she waited until 1938 to commence her higher education at Radford State Teachers College, East Radford, Va. After two years, she graduated with a Teacher's Certificate. She taught at several one and two-room schools in Scott County, Va., to earn the money to further her education. She attended summer school at East Tennessee State College, and in 1947 graduated with a BS degree in Business Administration.

She was hired by Bennett & Edwards Insurance, who sent her to the Insurance Company of North America School for insurance agents. She was the first woman to attend the school, and she graduated with honors.

In June 1948, she married Darrol Nickels at Litz Manor Methodist Church, where the Rev. D. M. Wagner performed the ceremony. They spent the past 64 years married and living in Kingsport. Georgia was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren.

Georgia was a skilled homemaker and craftsperson - she gave knitted afghans to all her children and grandchildren. In addition to knitting, she enjoyed appliqué, crochet, chair caning and needle point. She also maintained a flower garden as long as she was able. She loved birds and could identify many species.

She attended St. Matthew United Methodist Church as long as she was able. She loved her church and all the people in it. She participated as a Sunday school teacher, Circle member and board member. She especially loved the friends she made through Circle membership.

Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Darrol Nickels, of Kingsport; daughters; Patricia Helsley and husband, Ray, Jr., of Arden, NC, Pamela Minnick and husband, Keith, of Kingsport; son, Darrol G. "Greg" Nickels and wife, Linda Smith Nickels, of Kingsport; grandchildren, Ray Helsley III and wife, Brooke Mullen Helsley, of Memphis; Ashley Helsley and husband, Lt. A. J. Cox, of North Pole, Alaska, Brandon Minnick, Kristen Minnick and Gregory Nickels, all of Kingsport; sister-in-law, Ruth Deskins Osborne, of Palmetto, FL.

The family would like to acknowledge the able and compassionate personnel of Holston Valley Medical Center and Wexford House.
