Gerald Edward Monk Sr.

Gerald Edward Monk Sr., 78, Kingsport, TN went to his heavenly home on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Born in McDowell County, WV, he later moved to Honaker, VA for a short period of time before moving to Kingsport where he spent the remainder of his life. He was a brick and block mason, working inside Eastman and building many structures in Kingsport. Gerald enjoyed spending time outside hunting and fishing. After retirement, as a craftsman he loved to make primitive wooden décor which he would sell at festivals. Gerald was a great storyteller – he never met a stranger. He loved to sing and quote scripture.  Gerald was of the Baptist faith and dedicated many years spreading the word of God through preaching, singing and testimony. Gerald was a kind and generous man. He was the kind of man to take that leap of faith and give you his last dollar knowing God would, also, provide for him, if needed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Virginia Monk; son, Gerald Monk Jr.; six brothers and sisters; and the mother of his children, Jessie Marie Monk.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 13 years, Ethel Monk; daughters, Sheila Bright (Robert) and Melissa Wilson; step-children, Josh McClure (Candace) and Brandy Cox (Austin); grandchildren, Whitney Jenkins (Brandon), Jonathan Morelock, Ashley Parks (Greg), Brittany Finch (Chuck), and Brooke Gray (Andrew); step-grandchildren, Gracie Cox, Sandy McClure, Kaydace McClure and Hunter Hawk; great-grandchildren, Payton Morelock, Kyndall Morelock, Ryson Jenkins, Brandon Jenkins, Ashton Parks, Brantley Finch, Annaliese Finch, Hadley McLain and Waylon Gray; aunt, Tressa Gilliam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Charlie Byrd and Rev. Eddie McAmis officiating.  A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
