Gilbert Ernest Vogel

Gilbert Ernest Vogel, 88, of Kingsport, died at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 11, 2009 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Born on March 7, 1921, he was the son of Elmer E. and Viola Bertha Schwader Vogel.

Mr. Vogel resided in the St. Joseph, MO, area, coming to Kingsport 15 years ago. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 - 1945, completing his basic training in Hawaii and Australia and later serving on New Guinea and a few other small islands, Philippine Islands and Japan. Mr. Vogel worked for the U.S. Postal Service beginning in April, 1949, until his retirement in August, 1980. After his retirement, he helped with the Older Adult Transportation Service OATS. He was a member of St. Joseph Lodge No. 78 F & AM for more than 50 years. Mr. Vogel was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Vogel was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon E. Vogel and Ralph Vogel and an infant son who died in 1953.

He is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Helen C. Langtim Vogel of the home; a son, Ernie Vogel and wife Julie and three grandchildren, Greg, Alina, and Matthew Vogel, all of Kingsport; and a niece, Gretchen Basen of Towson, MD.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Daniel S. Clark officiating. Visitation will follow the service at the church.
