Gladston Wayne Hammonds, 82, Kingsport, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Indian Path Medical Center due to complications related to a fall.
He grew up on his grandparents’ farm in the Alley Valley Community of Scott County, Virginia and graduated from Shoemaker High School, Gate City, VA.
Upon graduation Wayne began working for Bays Mountain Construction, later transferring to Tennessee Eastman Company. He was employed in the Engineering and Construction Division when he retired after 42 years of service.
Wayne was a member of the Catlett Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of First Broad St. United Methodist Church for 47 years and served as an usher at the 9:45 service.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Irene Spencer and Gladston Wood Hammonds and his grandparents, W. B. and Mae Spencer and Thomas and Rachel Hammonds.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marilyn Brooks Hammonds; two sons, Kevin Brooks Hammonds and wife, Melissa of Greenville, SC, Jason Wayne Hammonds and wife, Robin of Houston, TX; one granddaughter, Marin Elise Hammonds of Houston, TX; three special cousins, Barbara Oltmann of Northridge, CA, Shirley Gibford and husband, Myron of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Martine Haynes and husband, John of Kingsport, TN.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Broad Street United Methodist Church General Fund, 100 East Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660, or Scott Humane Society, P.O. Box 1535, Gate City, VA 24251.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Randy Frye and Rev. Jim Harless officiating.
The graveside service will be conducted on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Holston View Cemetery with Rev. Jack Weikel officiating.
Pallbearers will be Joe Slaughter, Ed Moody, Bob Lane, Bill Cordell, Tom Brock, and Jon Pritchett. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Richmond, Tom Hilton, Jim Stallard, and the Thursday Rush Street Meeting Group.
