Gladys Johnson Adkins, 83, of Kingsport, and formerly of Morrow, GA, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Holston Valley Medical Center following a stroke and long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Pike County, Kentucky, to Kelsey and Lonzo Johnson both now deceased.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kelsie and Lonzo Johnson; her husband of 57 years, Herman B. Adkins; their son, H. Bruce Adkins, II; and her sister, Betty Thacker.
She is survived by her three daughters, Dottie Layne and husband Bob, Vickie Key and husband Charlie, and Strossia Lee; six grandchildren, Rob Layne and wife Sherry, Eric Layne and wife Missy, Lucretia Key Davis, Charmon Key Roberson and husband Jason, Ericka Key Ragsdale and Torie Key Ragsdale; eight great-grandchildren, Garrett and Gregory Layne, Alex and Jordan Layne, Erin Davis, Kealy and Jared Roberson and Kaunor Davidson; three brothers, Tom Johnson and wife June, Frank Johnson and wife Dorothy, Ken Johnson and wife Thelma; one sister, Ann Little and husband Don; one brother-in-law, Karfa Thacker; three sisters-in-law, Avonell Potter, Faydell Blackburn, and Goldie Adkins; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. Adkins was a loving wife and mother who was devoted to her family and always took interest in her husband's, children' s and grandchildren's activities. She was a strong supporter of the Democratic Party and of her husband's Union work. She was active in PTA and sports booster clubs. She and her husband were active in Forest Park Lodge F&AM, Eastern Star and Tara Shrine Club. She was an avid fan of country and gospel music and learned to play the guitar in her later years. Her children always loved to listen to her and her husband sing. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends and her "best buddies", Lucy and Gracie.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 9th at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Carl Strickler officiating.
A brief graveside service where Mrs. Adkins will be buried beside her husband and son will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Friday, April 10th at Sherwood Memorial Park and Gardens in Jonesboro, GA, for family and friends in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
