Gladys Compton Sexton, 96, passed away Monday evening, April 23, 2007, at Greystone Health Care Center.
Born in Russell County, Virginia, she lived most of her adult life in the Gunnings community near Blountville. She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening ? both flowers and vegetables; and she loved preparing delicious meals for her family and friends.
She was a charter member of Gunnings Bible now Baptist Church where she taught Junior High Sunday School and Bible School for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman K. Sexton; her son, Curtis W. Sexton; her father and step-mother, Garland and Zola Compton; her mother and step-father, Pearl and Will Sexton; and several half-brothers and half-sisters.
Survivors include her daughters, Helen Maines, Kingsport, and Geraldine Riner, Blountville; a daughter-in-law, Bernice Sexton, Blountville; grandchildren, Jim Deck, Patsy and Ron Carroll, Gary and Connie Sexton, Rick and Barbara Sexton, Tammy and Roger Campbell; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Campbell, Sommer Campbell, Brandon Carroll and Ashley; a great-great-grandchild, Landon Carroll; half-sisters, Edna Manis, Nell Castle, Bell Morelock, and Daisy Green; half-brothers, Farris Compton and Gene Compton; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor J. W. Depew and Pastor Bob Ferguson officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Gunnings Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Campbell, Brandon Carroll, Ron Carroll, Roger Campbell, and nephews ? Danny Owens, Tim Pullon, Larry Manis, and Venus Gray. Honorary pallbearers will be Fain and Maxine Bell, Fred and Becky Walters, and Phil and Lena Hensley.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one?s choice.
