Glen Clayton Smith died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 20, 2011 following a three year battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He was born on October 18, 1936 in Valdosta, GA, the son of Ruth McCrimmon Smith and Clayton Perry Red Smith. He graduated from Decatur GA High School in 1954, and earned degrees from Georgia Tech in 1958 Mechanical Engineering and 1966 Master's Degree in Industrial Management. He served in the US Air Force from 1959-1963, stationed in Minot, ND.

He began a 31 year career with Eastman Chemical Company in 1964 in the Fiber Development Division. When he retired in 1996, he was a Senior Research Mechanical Engineer in the Cellulose and Fibers Technology Division.

Glen is survived by his wife of 46 years, Peggy Frederick Smith; two daughters, Meg Rosselot and husband Alan of Decatur, GA, and Katie Davis and husband Jeffrey of Baltimore, MD; four grandchildren, Christopher and Clay Rosselot, Carrie and Charley Davis.

His family and friends knew him to be a good, gentle, thoughtful man who quietly shared his time and talents with others. Glen was a life-long learner, a reader of history and economics. In 1995 he became a licensed Recreational Pilot and was part owner of a Cessna 150. He had a great appreciation of wood and spent many hours in his workshop making items for his home and his children. Another favorite place was Lake Hartwell, SC, where he enjoyed being on the water in any type of boat. He also was an avid traveler, enjoying long road trips.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Kingsport on Monday, October 24, 2011 at 11:00 am, The Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle officiating. Family will receive friends following the service.
