Gordon Wayne Gibson, 70, died on Saturday, February 18, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport.
Prior to his illness, Wayne served at Arcadia United Methodist Church as Sunday School Superintendent and taught the Adult Sunday School class for years. He had a special love for working on the grounds of Arcadia Cemetery and Arcadia United Methodist Church. He took pride in all he did and his handy work can be seen throughout the Church. He also coached for many years in the Bloomingdale Optimist Girls Softball League. His two greatest passions were mowing and polishing on his vehicles.
He retired after more than 38 years of service from Tennessee Eastman Company where he worked as a Lab Technician.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde William Gibson and mother, Lillian Katherine Gibson.
Those left to remember his loves and joys, and what a wonderful and loving person he was, include his wife: Elizabeth Hicks Gibson; son, William "Bill" Gibson and wife, Traci; daughters, Angela Gilliam and husband, James, Jody Head and husband, Trevor; eight grandchildren, Tyler Gibson, Allison Gibson, Jackson Gibson, Christopher Gilliam, Alyssa Gilliam, Payton Marshall, Baylee Head and Chapel Head; sister, Barbara Williams and husband, H.L.; brother, George Gibson and wife, Ilene; brother-in-law, Lloyd Hicks and wife, Doris; sisters-in-law, Jean Fulkerson and Carolyn Allen; several nieces and nephews; and best friends, Maggie and Buddie.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, February 20, at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 21 at Arcadia United Methodist Church with Rev. David Poore, Rev. Regina Shelton and Rev. William D. Gibson officiating.
Interment will follow the funeral service at East Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be grandsons, William Tyler Gibson, Christopher Larry Gilliam, Payton Wayne Marshall, Jackson Clyde Gibson, Chapel Scott Head, and nephews, Gary Hicks and Michael Hicks. Honorary pallbearers will be men of the Adult Sunday School Class: Bill Bentley, Bob McKenzie, Bobby McKenzie, Greg Harvey, David Ring, Richard Nottingham, Bill McKenzie, Charlie Hensley, Gene Snapp, Frankie Bolling, Ricky Nottingham and Bud Sisk.
