Greg Lee Durham, 71, a lifetime resident of Kingsport, TN, passed away suddenly on August 28th. Greg was born on February 25, 1953 to Cecil and Reba Durham in Kingsport. During his high school career at Dobyns Bennett High School, Greg picked up a love for basketball and grew his skills under Coach Buck Van Huss. Greg also developed a passion for cars and racing. Both of these interests followed him throughout his life and as late as 2019 he was competing, and won gold medals, in the Senior Olympics in basketball. He began a 40 plus year deeply loved career with the Hill family of dealerships where he built many lasting friendships with employees and customers alike. In 1984, Greg met his wife Jo at the Bristol racetrack. Greg and Jo went on to have two children, Amanda and Ashley. In 2024, Greg retired and spent his time with Jo in their daylily garden.
Greg was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Lee Durham; his mother, Reba Frazier Durham; his sister, Brenda Conner; and his brother in-law, Bill Conner.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jo Durham; daughter, Amanda Lea Wright and husband, Anthony Hubert Wright; and their children, Jackson Durham Davis and Shane Wright; daughter, Ashley Renee Durham; and her children, Alex Jacob Lee Wyatt, Vivian Ophelia Kave and Abigail Taylor Kave; nieces, Kathy Conner Shofner and Laura Conner; and many extended family members in the Brooks, Rutledge and Pennington families.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 31, 2024 from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Jerry Fritz and Bill Mullins officiating.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday, September 1, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Laurel Valley Cemetery, VA. Pallbearers will be Steven Brooks, Zach Booher, Anthony Wright, Alex Wyatt, Shane Wright, Jackson Davis and Jeff Gilliam.
