H. Wayne Thompson
Howard Wayne Thompson, 78, Kingsport, TN, passed away September 29, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Thompson was born in Bloomingdale and lived his entire life in Kingsport. He graduated from Lynn View High School where he played basketball under Coach Mattherly. After attending Emory and Henry College, he married his sweetheart, Ann Ellen Henderson in 1955 and they were together for 57 years. Wayne and Ann were married at First Methodist First Broad Street in Kingsport and were active in hospital/homebound visitations for many years.
Wayne served in the U.S. Armed Forces in Germany in 1956 in the 3rd Armored Division and received a good conduct medal with an honorable discharge in 1958. While in the service he learned welding by trade and came back to Kingsport to work as an apprentice at Tennessee Eastman where he worked as a welder/pipefitter for 40 years, retiring in 1995.
While working at Eastman, Wayne also taught welding at Tri-Cities Technical School and delivered papers on a motor route for the Knoxville News Sentinel. Interested in local politics, he served as a pollster in Colonial Heights and was friendly and sincere to everyone he met. He was a faithful member of his church and contributed time and donations to many causes.
Wayne was preceded in death by brother, Donald Thompson; brother-in-law, Richard Price, and parents, Charles Howard Thompson and Laura Jane Litton.
Surviving are sons, Steve Edward Thompson who resides outside the country, Jonathan Eric Thompson of Powell, TN and wife, Ann Thompson of Kingsport; brothers, Lowell and Sam Thompson; sisters, Charlene Clark, Janice Barrett, both of Kingsport, Katherine Price of Westland, MI; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, October 3rd at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 pm with Rev. Mickey Rainwater officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 4th at East Lawn Memorial Park. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Posts 3/265.
Pallbearers will be David Thompson, Donald Thompson, Chad Thompson, Allen Thompson, Bryan Clark and Wendell Smith.
