In loving memory of Hagan Chester Bright, an extraordinary man who lived to the age of 101 and left an indelible mark on the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Hagan died peacefully on November 4, 2023 after a life well lived.
Born on January 22, 1922, Hagan Bright grew up to be a dedicated and patriotic individual. He was a star high school athlete at Dobyns-Bennett and was known as Hagan “Shotgun” Bright. He was a member of the varsity football, basketball, track, and golf teams. He was on the 1941 football team that won the East Tennessee Championship and Big 5 Grid title. In 1942, during his senior year, he won first place in the individual category of the Annual Men’s University of Tennessee relay. Dobyns Bennett did not have a swim team at that time but in 1942, Hagan won the 100-meter swimming and diving competition at the American Legion Pool.
After graduation, he reported for service in the Army Air Corps. He graduated from flight school in December 1943 in Alabama. He was trained in flying the B-25, B-17, and B-29. He was stationed in Alamogordo, New Mexico when the atomic bomb was tested in White Sands. Hagan served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
In September 1943, Hagan married his high school sweetheart, Claudia Gardner. Their marriage spanned an incredible 72 years, a testament to their deep love and commitment to each other. Together, they faced life’s joys and challenges, creating a strong and loving family.
Hagan graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1949 with a Major in Accounting and a Minor in Economics. He was a proud member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity where he served as vice-president, cultivated enduring friendships and cherished memories that lasted a lifetime.
Hagan was an astute businessman. He owned and operated the Moccasin Gap Service Station and Tire Company for 15 years before accepting a position at Holston Defense Corporation where he held the title of Personnel Supervisor. He retired after 25 years of service. He was also a member of American Legion Post 3 for the past 64 years.
Hagan is survived by his son, Richard Bright, who along with his wife, Billie provided him with the joy of two grandchildren, Whitney Woyke (Mike Woyke) and Aaron Bright (Rachel Bright). In addition, Hagan leaves behind four great-grandchildren, Ada Bright, Hagan Bright, Max Ungerboeck and Xander Ungerboeck who have brought immeasurable happiness into his life. Hagan is also survived by his dear sister, Pearl Stafford, who shared a lifetime of memories and a unique bond with him. His other sister, Kathleen Miller predeceased him.
His caregiver, Vonda Hagar, was with him for 18 years and became not only a reliable source of support but also a cherished friend. Dr. John Kliesch, Nurse Dakota and Nurse Laura went above and beyond in providing incredible medical care.
