Harold L. Austin

Harold Austin, 87, Kingsport, passed away peacefully in the early morning of December 27. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Harold was a Navy aficionado who enjoyed attending reunions with his shipmates from the U.S.S. Panamint. After his tours of duty, Harold joined Mason and Dixon Trucking, working his way up from the supply department to the company's director of properties. After Mason and Dixon's closure, Harold started a second career as a contractor for Appalachian Oil, passing his licensure exam on the first attempt.
Harold was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon, Elder and youth leader.
He was an avid and enthusiastic bowler.
Harold was a loving and supportive husband to his wife of 67 years, Helen, and a caring, compassionate father and grandfather.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Harve E. and Nannie C. Austin; brothers , Harvey Austin and Edward Austin; and sister, Estelle Austin.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen Glass Austin; children, Mary Chase Austin Vines; Debbie Austin Ramey and husband Philip; Lee Austin and wife Nancy; grandchildren, Donna Turner, Mark Vines, Scott Vines, David Ramey, Ashlea Ramey, Kristina Austin, and Kimberly Austin; four great-grandchildren; sister, Garnett Wright; and several special nieces and nephews.
His kind, gentle spirit and quick smile will be remembered and cherished by all who knew and loved him.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of Wellmont CVA Heart Institute, Dr. Bruce Vincent and his staff, Kristy Vincent, the caregivers of Asbury Place, Holston Manor and Remington House and special neighbors Dallas and Bobbie Shoun for their love, kindness and support.
The family will receive friends Monday, December 30, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church. The memorial service will follow with Pastor Dan Clark officiating.
