Harold "Sarge" Childress, 82, of Kingsport passed away April 7, 2013 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Sullivan County and was proud to have been a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Blountville High School and was an Army veteran of the Korean War, where he was a member of the 278th Field Artillery.
Sarge was a life member of the American Legion, a member of the VFW and the Elks Lodge. He regularly attended the Kingsport Methodist Church. He retired in 1995 from the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department. He was a former Sullivan County Commissioner and was a Constable for many years.
He was preceded in death by an infant son; his father, James Childress; mother, Ada Childress Hodges; brother, Hubert Childress.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Helen Carroll Childress; one sister, Helen C. Boyd of Kingsport; one nephew, Gene Childress; two great nephews and one great niece.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 8 pm Tuesday with Rev Jim Manis officiating. Graveside services are scheduled for 11 am Wednesday at East Lawn Memorial Park. Military rites will be provided by the VFW.
Pallbearers will be Edgar Gamble, Ray Hilton, J.B. Moody, Dickie Warren, Jim Clark and Calvin Smith.
