Harrell Julian Lewis died on January 31, 2018. He was 90 years old. Born in Kinston, North Carolina in 1927, he was the son of the late Rev. Harrell J. Lewis and Emma Lawrence Lewis. He was married to Letty Lois Lewis for 57 years until her death on November 19, 2009. Julian attended North Carolina State University where he earned a BS Degree in Chemical Engineering and an MS Degree in Chemical Engineering and Mathematics. He went to work for Tennessee Eastman in 1950 as a research chemical engineer and served in various positions in research until his retirement in 1987.
Julian loved golf, tennis and especially hiking and backpacking in the Appalachian Mountains. He was an enthusiastic member of the Eastman Hiking Club. He enjoyed serving as an assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 50 for many years. Julian was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Lewis.
Julian is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Armstrong and husband, Greg; son, Bill Lewis and wife, Aubin; grandsons, Will Lewis and wife, Ana, and Ben Lewis; and great-granddaughter, Nora Lewis.
A graveside service will take place at 1:30 pm on Monday, February 5, 2108 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Memorial Gardens with The Rev. Dr. Anna Brawley officiating. The family will receive friends in Berndt Hall immediately following the service.
