Harvey E. Jewell, 87, of Kingsport, TN died Wednesday, January 26, 2011.

He was born in Gillett, WI on May 8, 1923. Harvey joined the Navy at age 19 in 1942 as an enlisted man going up through the ranks. He served in WWII, Vietnam and many other places. We are still learning of all his military accomplishments, but it is clear that he was one of a kind and a true hero to his family and country. Harvey was a member of Virginia Beach Methodist Church for 30 years where he went on many mission trips, mainly to Mexico. He also volunteered in several areas of the church and also a mission called the Potter's House and Habitat for Humanity. Harvey moved to Kingsport, TN 6 ½ years ago where he attended Bethel Presbyterian Church and later became a member of Mafair Methodist Church. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and working in his yard, garage sales and fishing in Canada every summer for over 25 years.

Harvey was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Norma Jean Query Jewell of Lafayette, IN; parents, Robert and Bernice Scutt Jewell; two brothers, Wilmer Jewell and Rodney Jewell of WI.

Survivors include 4 children, all formerly of Lafayette, IN: Sylvia Jewell Bement and husband, Gary of Kingsport, TN, Stewart Jewell of Jones Creek, TX, Aaron Jewell and wife Rhonda of Raleigh, NC, Marcy Jewell Spear of Phoenix, AZ; 2 step children, all of Virginia Beach, VA: Randy Gilliam, Michelle McArdle and husband, Shawn; 8 grandchildren: Bret Bement and wife, Traci of Clinton, NJ, Jared Bement and wife, Mary Beth of Rockwell, TX, Joshua Spear of Phoenix, AZ, Amber Spear Goldney and husband, Eric of Salem, AL, Jordan, Anna and Jacob Jewell of Raleigh, NC, Caleb Jewell of Jones Creek, TX; 2 step grandchildren: Tyler McArdle, Elizabeth McArdle; 4 great-grandchildren: Codi Bement of Danbury, CT, Braylin Bement of Clinton, NJ, Isaias and Gideon Bement of Rockwell, TX; 5 sisters: Alice Hamsen and Lois Riemer of Gillett, WI, Mary Jean Berger of Two Rivers, WI, Cora Boest of Gillett, WI, Bernie Paulson and husband, Bob of Gillett, WI; 2 brothers: George Jewell of Oceanside, CA, Bob Jewell and wife, Lynn of Milwaukee, WI; 3 sisters-in-law: Lorraine Jewell of Milwaukee, WI, Barbara Kretmeier of West Lafayette, IN, Pat Query of Lafayette, IN; many nieces and nephews in Wisconsin and Indiana. He also leaves his special friend, Leonard "Pete" Peters and his walking buddies of Kingsport, TN.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Mafair United Methodist Church. The service will begin at 4 pm with Minister Gary Bement and Rev. Kim Goddard officiating.

An inurnment service will be conducted at 10 am Monday at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Posts #3/265.
