God called and Haskel, 79, answered on Wednesday, November 7, 2007.

He was the son of the late John Ober and Bertha Crabtree Shanks of Milburnton Community in Greene County. Haskel attended Chuckey High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired from Quebecor Book Manufacturing Company in 1993. He was of the Christian Faith, publicly accepting Christ during his teen years. Haskel was a member of a United Brethren Church for several years; and after moving to Kingsport, became a member of a Southern Baptist Church for the rest of his life.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mauveline Shanks Simpson; and brothers, Leonard Keith, Ralph Oran, and John Thurman Shanks.

Surviving are his wife, Maxie Doty Shanks, Kingsport; two sons, Roger and wife, Nichelle Johnson Shanks, Kingsport, Douglas and wife, Lucy Sagliano Shanks, Sevierville; a granddaughter, Katie Marie Shanks, Kingsport; a grandson Jordan Shanks, Sevierville; step-grandchildren, Michael and Britney Fisher, Jonnie Fisher Hancock and husband, Matthew, all of Sevierville; step great-grandsons, Christian and Zackery Hancock of Sevierville; a twin brother Hursel A. Shanks and wife, Betsy, of Nashville; three sisters-in-law, Athyne Evans Shanks, Ruth Ware Shanks of Kingsport, Lois Doty Hipps of Anniston, Alabama; four brothers-in-law, E. LeRoy Doty and wife, Willie Nell, A. Duane Doty and wife, Wanda, Kingsport, Lyle A. Doty and wife, Hazel of Morristown, and R. Gardell Doty and wife, Lois ?Toots? of Greene County; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mt. Carmel. Celebration services will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the church with Dr. Randall Pressnell and Rev. T. Richard Harris officiating. Immediately following the service, entombment of the body will be at Oak Hill Mausoleum in Kingsport.

Nieces and nephews will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
