Mary Helen McConnell Copenhaver McKee, 94, Kingsport, died Saturday August 18, 2007 at Asbury-Steadman Hill Assisted Living Campus.
Helen was born February 28, 1913, in Scott County, Virginia to Dr. Hiram K. McConnell and Mary L. Gray McConnell. She spent her childhood in Scott County, graduating from Shoemaker High School in 1931. Helen graduated from Virginia Intermont College in 1933 and attended Radford College and the University of Alabama. She graduated from Emory & Henry College, Emory, VA, in 1935. Mrs. McKee was a teacher in the Scott County school system from 1936-1941. She taught in Smyth County Virginia schools for 33 years; retiring in 1977.
Mrs. McKee was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Julian V. Copenhaver, Sr. and Roy McKee; grandson, James Vawter Buis; and brother, Dr. Fred McConnell.
Surviving are her son, Julian V. Copenhaver, Jr. and wife, Barbara, Hendersonville, NC; her daughter, Mary Matilda Copenhaver Buis, Richmond, VA; granddaughter, Kelly Anne Copenhaver, Bowling Green, KY; grandson, Captain John Errett Buis, USMC, and wife, Megan Stidham Buis, Camp LeJeune, NC; sister-in-law, Anabel McConnell, Kingsport; and numerous nieces and nephews.
It was Helen?s wishes to be cremated. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 ? 3:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow.
