Henderson T. Hood, 82, of Kingsport, died at home Friday, January 10, 2014 surrounded by his family after an extended illness.
A lifelong resident of Kingsport, Henderson was a 1950 graduate of Sullivan High School.
Henderson retired from Eastman Chemical Company after 42 years of service. He has been a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America for 50 years, which included 32 years as Scoutmaster of Troop 57. He has received various awards, including the Scoutmaster Award of Merit, Silver Beaver Award, District Award of Merit, Scouters Key, Scouters Training Award, Adult Religious Award from the United Methodist Church, and The Eagle Scout Class of 2007 from Sequoyah Council was named in his honor. He was also a Vigil Honor Member of the Order of the Arrow and has served as Lodge Advisor for the Sequoyah Lodge 184 B.S.A.
Henderson served as a member of the "Wednesday Crew" that works on various projects at Davy Crockett Boy Scout Camp. He was currently a member of the Appalachian Express Barbershop Chorus. He was an active member of Glen Alpine United Methodist Church, holding various church committee positions. Henderson was also a member of the Adult Choir. He received the Sertoma Club Service to Mankind Award.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Flo Kern Hood; second wife, Joan Smith Hood; daughter, Amy Hood; and fifteen brothers and sisters.
Henderson is survived by his wife, Lois Chandley Hood of the home; two daughters, Susan Beverly and husband David of Luttrell, TN and LuAnna Dougherty and fiancé, Dennis Jobe of Kingsport; two sons, Michael Hood of Luttrell, TN and Robin Hood and wife, Melinda of Kingsport; stepchildren, Jeanine Collins of Cross City, FL, Jill Collins (special caregiver) of the home, Bobby Joe Smith of Radford, VA, Betsy Kern and husband, Robert of Cleveland, TN; fourteen grandchildren, Josh, Jessica, Bonnie, Boone, Matt, Blake, Jason, Dustin, Randa, Dylan, Amanda, Carol Ann, Anthony, and Andrew; sixteen great-grandchildren, Ethan, Kayden, Ethan, Cole, Maddox Henderson, Ben, Jacob, Brooke, Sofia, Hannah, Taylor, Charlotte, Anna Catherine, Zachary, Chloe, and Nathan; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Glen Alpine United Methodist Church with Rev. Rhonda K. Hobbs and Rev. James "Rusty" Taylor officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the Fellowship Hall.
Honorary pallbearers will be the "Wednesday Crew" at Camp Davy Crockett.
