Henry James Brown, M.D.

Henry James Brown, M.D., 87, Kingsport, died Thursday evening, August 14, 2008, at Preston Place Suites.

A native of Iuka, Mississippi, he completed his Pre-Medical studies at Ole Miss in 1941 and graduated from UT Memphis Medical School in 1944 where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Fraternity. He interned in UT Memphis at John Gaston Charity Hospital and served as a doctor for a U. S. Navy Squadron of mine sweepers during World War II. He practiced 19 months in Booneville, Mississippi, prior to serving his residency at Louisville General Hospital in Internal Medicine.

Jim came to Kingsport in June 1950 and practiced Internal Medicine until his retirement in 1987. He served on the original board for Friends in Need, served on the board at Madison House and Baysmont, and was Chief of Staff for Holston Valley in 1960 at the time of the Eastman explosion. Jim had an avid interest in Alzheimers Research & Treatment programs. While in practice he also had a special interest and did consultation work in cardiovascular diseases. After retirement he became interested in pediatrics to treat his growing number of grandchildren. He was an avid gardener and "birder" and a member of the ROMEO Club Retired Old Medics Eating Out.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Dr. Robert Jackson Brown and Mattie Belle Watson Brown; and siblings, Watson Brown, Robert Brown, Elizabeth Sterritt, and Morella Holdridge.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Anne Von Bramer Brown of Kingsport; his children, Constance Jane Leonard and spouse Dr. Don Leonard of Greensboro, North Carolina, Patricia Anne Jameson and spouse Dr. Lake Jameson of Clemson, South Carolina, Eliza Ruth Harmon and spouse Roy Harmon of Kingsport, Henry James Brown Jr. and spouse Natalie Whitlock of Kingsport, Marguerite Lee Katras and spouse Dr. Tony Katras of Johnson City; grandchildren, Samantha Leonard, Ali Leonard, Andy Jameson and spouse Misty Jameson, Meg Sutton and spouse Troy Sutton, Emily Jameson, Dr. Kathleen Jameson, John Jameson, Watson Brown, Madison Brown, Raleigh Brown, Luke Stanley, and Matt Stanley; a great-grandson, Wesley Jameson; and a beloved caregiver, Gale Fletcher of Church Hill.

There will be a graveside service at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

A memorial service will conducted at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Burton officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at the church.
