Henry Joe Smith, 74, of Kingsport, died Tuesday morning, October 7, 2008, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, Mr. Smith had worked for Mason-Dixon Truck Lines as computer operations manager for 23 years. He then was co-owner of Charter Data Systems in Bristol, Tennessee, until his retirement in January of 2000. He enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was a Christian of the Baptist faith.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Henry and Mary Smith; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jess and Mary Lemmons.
Surviving are his wife, Arica "Slim" Lemmons Smith of the home; one daughter, Michelle Hatley and husband Tom of Kingsport; one son, Mike Smith and wife Annette of Clinton, TN; four grandchildren, Cheyenne Trunnell and husband Phil, Joey Smith and wife Susan, Ben Smith, Austin Hatley; two great-grandsons, Caleb and Samuel Trunnell; two sisters, Shirley Dorton of Kingsport, Trula Johnson of Frederick, Maryland; one sister-in-law, Lowanda Brown of Fall Branch; and several nieces.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport and any time at the home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Ralph M. Kidd officiating. The eulogy will be given by Wallace Grills.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at East Lawn Memorial Park. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Those attending the graveside service should meet at Hamlett-Dobson by 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
