Henry Lamar Williams, Jr., age 89, of Kingsport passed away Monday, July 15, 2013, at Indian Path Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born December 4, 1923, in Fitzgerald, GA, the son of the late Henry L. Williams, Sr., and Lucile Slade Williams. He lived in Knoxville, TN, and Roanoke, VA, before moving to Kingsport in 1940. He graduated from Sullivan High School in 1942 and served in the Marine Corps in the 6th Marine Division in the South Pacific from December 1942 until December 1945 and was in the initial landing of Japan. He was called back into the Marine Corps in 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of VFW No. 3382 and was a past commander in 1971. He also was a member of Moose Lodge No. 972.
Henry was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church and a charter member of Greer Memorial Sunday School Class. He was employed at Tennessee Eastman Company for 42 years. For many years he was an avid golfer and was a member of Meadowview Golf Club.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sister, Betty Williams Newman of Knoxville and his son-in-law, Douglas Van Huss of Kingsport.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Angela Brown Williams; two daughters, Marsha Van Huss Carter and husband, Paul, and Melinda Rogers and husband, Dale; three grandchildren, Benjamin Rogers of Nashville, Andrew Van Huss and wife, Melissa, Gallatin, and Sarah Johnson and husband, Jason, Kingsport; and great-grandson, Eli.
Committal services will be conducted at 1:00 p. m. Thursday (July 18, 2013) in Oak Hill Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by The American Legion, Hammond Post # 3 and Gate City Post # 276. Those attending committal services are asked to assemble at the graveside by 12:45 p. m. Thursday.
A Celebration of his Life will be conducted at 2:00 p. m. Thursday (July 18, 2013) at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Mickey Rainwater and Dr. J. Spurgeon McCartt officiating. The family will receive friends following services in the fellowship hall.
