Herbert William Hoover, 89, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Steadman Hill following an extended illness.
He was born on April 9, 1921 in Graysville, TN. After graduating from Carson-Newman College in 1943, Herbert joined the United States Navy where he was commissioned an ensign. While performing service on a rocket gunboat in the Pacific Theatre, he was promoted to lieutenant, junior grade. In recognition of his outstanding leadership in the Leyte and Lingayen invasions, Herbert was awarded the Bronze Star.
At the end of World War II he settled in Kingsport as a certified public accountant. With his partner, Roscoe Harrison, he began the accounting firm Hoover Harrison Associates. Herbert was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W, the Tennessee Society of C.P.A's, and the American Institute of C.P.A's Herbert served as campaign treasurer for Congressman Jimmy Quillen for 30 years, and served as a delegate to the White House Council on Small Business. He was an active member of First Baptist Church for over 60 years.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Spurgeon and Nannette Hoover, along with two of his brothers, Charles and Robert Hoover.
Herbert is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Laurena Billington Hoover; his four sons: Mark of Lake Orion, MI; Roger and his wife, Susan of Kingsport; David and his wife, Andi of Kingsport; and Kent and his wife, Kate of Arlington, VA; three grandsons: Michael and his wife, Rebecca; Rob and his wife, Autumn; and Roger Williama"all of Kingsport; a granddaughter, Mariah of Lake Orion, MI; his brother, John of Rossville, GA; and his sisters: Nannette and her husband, Clayton Morgan of Huntsville, AL; and Mary Ann and her husband, Joe Ledbetter of Mount Juliet, TN; and three great-grandchildren: Andrew, Abbey, and Reese Hoover of Kingsport.
The family will receive friends Saturday March 5, 2011 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Kingsport with Marvin Cameron and Ron Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Posts #3/265.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Baraca / Jonathan Sunday School Class.
