Howard L. Overbay passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011 at his home.
Howard was educated at Orebank Elementary, Blountville High School, and ETSU. He retired from Eastman Kodak after 37 ½ years of service. He was active in many clubs and organizations over the years, some of which include: 53 year member of the American Legion Post #3, 50 year member of Masonic Sinking Creek Lodge #575 of Gray, TN and he was a lifetime member and past Gold Coat President of Sertoma Club. He was a very active member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where he had served as Elder and in many other areas over the years. He served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents Charmie McClain Overbay and James Fain Overbay; and parents-in-law Georgia Wilson Hurd and Loyce Ray Hurd.
Survivors include his wife of 59 ½ years Audrey Hurd Overbay and beloved cat Hobo; sisters and brothers-in-law, Donald and Dare Burgin of Kingsport, TN, Billy and Beatrice Gardner of Gulfport, MS; nieces and nephews, Steve Burgin and wife, Paula, Judy Lester and husband, Sidney, and Donna Steadman, all of Kingsport TN, Joan Head, John Gardner and wife, Melody, Jim Gardner of Gulfport, MS, Joyce Pierce of Huntsville, AL, Jason Gardner and wife, Stacey, of Ft. Campbell, KY; his church family at Bethany Presbyterian Church; special friend Evelyn Jones; loving and caring caregivers, Eva Campbell, Gerrie Pope, Jewell Guy, Betty Sims, Marsha Starnes; special cousin Mary Elizabeth Morelock.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home Kingsport. The service will begin at 7 pm with Rev. Chuck Echols officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday at East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be John Hurt, Donny Byrd, Sidney Lester, Steve Burgin, Kory Steadman, and Chris Barrett. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Williams, Joe Herron, George Witherspoon, Walter Kirby, and Gordon Newland.
