Howard Payne

Howard Payne, 76, of Kingsport, formerly of Wytheville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at the residence of his brother following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Derby, VA on December 15, 1941, a son of the late Shelby and Ethel V. Payne, he had resided in this area for the past 7 weeks after moving from Wytheville. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was also stationed in the Philippines, having served in the US Army. He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation following 22 years of service. Howard will be remembered as a loving and devoted brother and friend who was an avid ham radio operator and loved to travel abroad.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center for all of their care.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by son, Howard Edward Payne; brother, Thomas Lee Payne; and 4 sisters, Alice Caldwell, Lois White, Loretta McNew and Mae Beatrice Gannis.

Howard is survived by his brother, Dan Payne and wife, Carmen of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; and his special and close friend, Helen Reedy of Damascus, VA.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm on Friday, September 14, 2018 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. A Veterans Tribute Service will be provided by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter # 979 at 5:00 pm Friday. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 pm Friday in the chapel with Glenn Jackson and Darren McCugh officiating.

Burial will follow graveside services at 1:00 pm on Saturday at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Military honors will be accorded by The American Legion, Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265.

Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Those attending committal services are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 12:00 pm Saturday and then proceed to the cemetery.
