Hubert “Smitty” Ray Smith went to be with the Lord on June 11, 2024, at the young age of 96 at his home in Blountville, Tennessee. Smitty was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee to his parents Rufus L. and Cora Belle Couch Smith.
Smitty volunteered for World War II and was an enlisted member of the Navy for several years in the Pacific Theatre on the USS Allen M. Sumner. Though he was not in active combat, Smitty enjoyed sharing many memories of his time traveling around the U.S. (from training in San Diego to visiting Chicago in a snowstorm) and across the globe (including visiting Japan and taking part in the Operation Crossroads nuclear weapons test at Bikini Atoll in 1946).
Once out of the Navy, Smitty began his life-long career as an auto mechanic in Bristol, TN and was one of the first GM master mechanics. He eventually ran Brooks Car Clinic on Raytheon Road in Bristol for years and was a fixture in the community with his auto expertise. After a few short years of retirement, Smitty climbed back into the driver's seat making deliveries for Advanced Auto Parts where he continued his service to the community and his love for all things car-related. He was an avid NASCAR fan, particularly Dale Earnhardt, and a deviled egg enthusiast.
Smitty was married to his late wife Jewel “Jackie” Lafay Smith for over 64 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph L. Smith, and two sisters, Doris Whitaker and Jean Ray. Smitty is survived by his two sons David R. Smith (Kathy, deceased) of Bristol, TN and Dennis W. Smith (Kimberly) of Blountville, TN; three grandchildren Lindsay Smith of Brentwood, TN, Dr. Emily Smith (Gates) of Cleveland, OH and Abby Rosso (Ben) of Philadelphia, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
Smitty will forever be remembered as a kind and warm-hearted person, a loving husband, an amazing father/grandfather and a cherished friend to many. His wisdom, generosity and sharp wit will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the chapel at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 2630 Hwy. 75, Blountville, TN. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Garden of Solomon.
