Hugh E. Penland, 95, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 8, 2024, at Holston Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Kingsport. Hugh was born March 27, 1929, to the late William and Inez Penland in Asheville, NC. He graduated from Woodfin High School. After serving in the United States Army in Korea and Japan from 1951 to 1953, he attended UT and graduated in 1957 with a B.S. degree in Transportation. Upon graduation he accepted a position at Mason-Dixon Truck Lines. In 1985, he accepted a position of Director of Operations with Kenan Transport in Spartanburg, SC, where he remained until retirement in 1993. He was also a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. After moving back to Kingsport, he became an active member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church and the Crusade Sunday School class.
In addition to his parents, Hugh was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Margaret Penland and three brothers, Thomas Penland, Frank Penland, and Don Penland.
He is survived by his sons, Mark Penland of Knoxville and Paul Penland (Sandra) of Kingsport; grandchildren, John W. (Allison) Penland of Johnson City, Michelle K. Penland of Kingsport, Lindsay E. Penland of Knoxville and Adam D. Penland of Knoxville; sister-in-law, Janet Penland of Asheville, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
An inurnment will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. A memorial service will follow at the church at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Randy Frye and Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating. The family will be receiving friends following the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 E. Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660, St. Luke Methodist Church, 2600 E. Center St., Kingsport, TN 37664, or to the American Red Cross, 660 Eastern Star Rd., Kingsport, TN 37663.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Holston Rehab, Amedysis Hospice and the staff, nurses and physicians at Johnson City Medical Center.
