Ima Jean Scott

Mrs. Ima Jean Scott, of Kingsport, passed away Friday, July 26, 2013 at Holston Valley Hospital.

She was born in Kingsport, graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1947, and was a member of the DB Band.

Ima Jean began her teaching career after graduating from East Tennessee State University in 1951. She taught at Sullivan Elementary School and Andrew Johnson Elementary School before retiring from the Kingsport City School System. She remained active in education by participating in the Kingsport Retired Teachers' Association and the WETS (Women's Eating and Talking Society).

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James A. Scott. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Claude and Amy Overby, as well as two brothers, Lynwood and Harold Overby.

She is survived by her son, Stephen Scott, and wife Holly, Kingsport; sister-in-law, Betty Jacobs, Waycross, GA; brother-in-law, David Scott and wife, Vicki, Chapel Hill, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ima Jean was a very social person. She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church, and loved her friends in the Esther Sunday School Class. She was an avid Bridge Player, belonged to several bridge clubs, and was always in big demand as a "fill-in."

In addition to Bridge, Ima enjoyed all card games as well as the daily crossword puzzle. She loved cooking and trying new recipes. She doted over and spoiled a furry, four-legged friend named "Daisy", a miniature Schnauzer doggie who misses her dearly. So do we!

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 1, 2013, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and again from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport.

The funeral will be held on Friday, August 2, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Davis officiating. The graveside service will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park with the First Baptist Church Esther Sunday School Class serving as Honorary Pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church, 200 W. Church Circle, Kingsport, TN, 37660 or to the Kingsport Retired Teachers' Scholarship Fund, 400 Clinchfield St., Suite 200, Kingsport, TN, 37660.
