Iona M. Salyer of Kingsport passed away Thursday, February 14, 2008, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was born in West Dante, Virginia on March 20, 1921, to Robert C. Lambert, Sr. and Nannie B. Marshall Lambert, both now deceased.
Iona accepted Jesus Christ as her savior in 1952 while living in Clinchco, Virginia and joined the Clinchco Union Church. After moving to the Weber City, VA and Kingsport area, she transferred her membership, and at the time of her passing was a member of Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church.
As long as she was physically able, she faithfully attended Sunday School and church services. She especially enjoyed her Sunday School class and fellowship with those in her class.
Iona was a stay-at-home mom and later worked several years at Weber City Elementary School. She loved to sew and made clothes for herself and school clothes for her children. She also made many quilts for them and her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, J. Warren Salyer; brothers, Homer K. Lambert, Edgar Lambert, Ralph O. Lambert, Glenn Lambert; and one sister, Edna A. Holbrook.
Survivors include one son, J. Wayne Salyer and wife Linda, Kingsport; two daughters, Jean Wampler and husband Fred, Kingsport, and Carolyn Hubbard and husband Terry, Charlotte, NC; one brother, Robert C. Lambert, Jr and wife Julie, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; two sisters, Nora Lee Blackstone, Johnson City and Nell Elkins and husband James C. of Castlewood, VA; grandchildren, Vicki Ward and husband Andy, Stephen Wampler and wife Kim, Alisa Emery and husband John, and Michael Salyer; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. A memorial service will follow in the chapel at 8:00 p.m. Friday with Pastor Jeff Davis officiating.
Burial will be at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, VA Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Family members and friends will gather at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, grandsons-in-law, Chad Salyer, Mike Bays, and Howard Bowlin.
