KINGSPORT - Irene Gertrude Odum, 96, died Monday October 17, 2011 at NHC Healthcare in Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee.
Irene was born January 31, 1915 in Toms Creek, Wise County, Virginia and started school there. She moved to Johnson City, Tennessee, from Virginia with her parents, Houston Nave 1889-1963 and Lura Etta Collins Nave 1894-1973 in the early 1920s and
attended school there before moving to Kingsport.
Irene worked for the Tennessee Eastman from 1933-1941. She married Frank R. Odum February 15, 1936 and she was a resident of Kingsport for more than 80 years.
Irene was a homemaker and she and Frank raised 3 children. She was a Brownie Scout leader and her hobbies were playing piano and listening to music, painting, sewing, knitting and cooking. Irene sold Avon Products in the 1960s. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport and then the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 67 years Frank R. Odum; her sisters: Daphna Nave Alvis and Kitty Nave Welch; and her brothers Selbert and Richard Nave and her son-in-law, Scott Davis.
Surviving are her three loving children: Richard Dick Odum and wife, Norma of Johnson City, David Odum and wife, Wilma, of Gray and Darla Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; her three grandchildren: Amanda Nevins and husband, Ed, of San Antonio, TX; Rick Odum and wife, Becky, of Mountain Center, CA; and Jessi Odum of Kingsport; her three step-grandchildren: Jodi Carroll of Gray, Jeff Spratling and wife Lara of Bernie, MO; and Amy McKay and husband, Rick, of Bradenton, FL; her nine great-grandchildren: Noah, Kate and Lucas Odum of Mountain Center, CA; Sarah Nevins of San Antonio, TX; Eddie Nevins of Morgantown, WV Noah and Sara Spratling of Bernie, MO and Shae and Hannah McKay of Bradenton FL; brother: Hershel Nave and wife, Nancy, and brother-in-law: Johnny Welch; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Calling hours for Irene Odum are Thursday, October 20 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. Services will be conducted in the 7:00 pm with The Rev. J. Thomas Phillips officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00am Friday, October 21, 2011 at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City.
