Irvin Marshall Schwartz passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Chicago, Illinois to immigrant parents, Joseph and Lena Schwartz on November 21, 1925. After graduating from Hyde Park High School, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served his country stateside during the last 2 ½ years of WWII. After the war he attended the Illinois Institute of Technology where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
He had an illustrious career spanning 50 years during which he received many awards. He was most proud of a design award from the U.S. Air Force for development of a heating plant at Chicago O’Hare field. Irv was a former district commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America South Shore District, Chicago, and Council and Chairman of Troop 1500. After “retiring” in 1988, he moved to his wife Mary’s hometown of Kingsport only to find the desire to go back to work and spent 10 more years working with MTI, consulting locally. Irv was a member of The American Legion Hammond Post 3 in Kingsport.
Irv was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Mary Little Schwartz.
He is survived by his sister, Bess Geller; children, Gary Schwartz, Sheila Briggs (Jim), and Tim Troutman; grandchildren, Erin Wolfe (Joe), John Moody (Lauren), and Brandon Schwartz (Amy); great-grandchildren, Reagan Penix and Seth Wolfe; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 pm on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Chris Brown officiating. Entombment will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park with Military Rites by American Legion Posts 3/265. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
