Isabel Portrum Matherly, 85, of Kingsport passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2008.

Isabel's love of travel has taken her throughout the country and the world. Her first travels as a WAC in World War II brought her the love of her life - her husband of 62 years, Carl Shelton Matherly Charlie who she met and fell in love with in Berlin Germany. Together with Charlie, Isabel enjoyed a rich, fulfilling life. Her love of family and friends was the source of much happiness for Isabel. She was a career teacher and librarian with Sullivan County Schools, She was an important influence to the many students and children she touched through her career, and as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and community servant in Kingsport. Isabel was a life long learner, enjoying her love of nature, music, and books until her last day in this world. Isabel was a servant of God and a loyal member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Judge and Mrs. Henry E. Portrum, Rogersville, three brothers, Lt. Col. Peter Portrum, Mr. Eastman Portrum and Mr. Early Portrum, all of Rogersville; three sisters Mrs. Elizabeth Portrum Robertson, Rogersville, Mrs. Sarah Portrum McHorris and Mrs. Leonora Portrum Litton, both of Kingsport.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Mr. Carl Shelton Matherly, Sr. One daughter, Mrs. Martha Matherly Parham and husband Tom, Kingsport; one son, Mr. Carl Shelton Matherly, Jr. and wife Susan, Kermit VA; two grandsons, Mr. Joshua Park Matherly, Johnson City and Mr. Tyler McKinley Matherly, Kermit VA; and many nieces & nephews.

The family will receive friends 2:30-4:00 pm, Sunday, January 13, 2008 at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church, followed by a funeral service with Rev Daniel Clark officiating. Mrs. Matherly will be interned in the columbarium of Waverly Presbyterian Church in a private service.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Grandfather Home for Children, Banner Elk, NC or the Food Pantry of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church, 1415 Waverly Road, Kingsport TN.
