Master Chief Jack J. Dale USNR 85, of Kingsport, Tennessee, passed away December 9, 2012. He was born in Freeport, Illinois, son of Owen Dale and Mary O'Malia Dale. Jack attended St. Mary's grade school and Aquin High School in Freeport and earned his Bachelor's at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Sailor, father, husband, teacher, coach, industrial engineer, Jack shared his talents and teaching ability enriching the lives of others.

Jack married Elizabeth Anna Dupont in Dubuque, Iowa in 1954. Together, they raised three children in Dubuque, Iowa, White Fish Bay, Kenosha, and West Bend, Wisconsin and Huntington, West Virginia. They retired to Mary Esther, Florida, returning to Kingsport, Tennessee in 2003.

Master Chief Dale was proud of his service in the United States Navy, enlisting right after high school during World War II, serving in the reserves and attaining the highest enlisted rank in the Navy, Master Chief Petty Officer. His career counseling to his children often included the phrase... "when you get out of boot camp at Great Lakes"!

Jack's working career spanned a variety of fields starting with part time work with the Illinois Central Railroad where his engineer father and grandfather worked. His college education was enhanced by his part time residency as Egelhof Funeral Home in Dubuque as night attendant which fueled many interesting stories. After graduation, he taught and coached at Loras Academy in Dubuque, Iowa, Dominican High School in Shorewood, Wisconsin and Wahlert High School in Dubuque. He transitioned to the field of industrial engineering and personnel training with positions at John Deere Tractors, American Motors, Enger Kress Leather Products, General Electric, Ironton Coke and finally retiring from Mead Paper Company in Kingsport, Tennessee. Jack continued his love of teaching with active participation in the religious education programs at St. Frances Cabrini Parish in West Bend, Wisconsin and after retirement, in Florida, the Hurlburt Air Force Base Catholic Chapel CCD programs.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Betty Dale; parents, Owen Dale and Mary O'Malia; and sister, Beryl Weigal.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Susan Schemmel and husband, David of West Bend, Wisconsin; two sons, Steven O. Dale and wife, Sheila of Charleston, West Virginia, and Timothy Dupont Dale of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Andrew Schemmel and wife, Tabethe of Dubuque, Iowa, Joseph Schemmel of West Bend, Wisconsin, and Daniel Schemmel also of West Bend.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 13th from 5-7:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

A funeral mass will be conducted on Friday, December 14th at 11:00 am at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Mike Nolan officiating.

Burial will follow at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors by American Legion Posts 3/265.

Pallbearers will be Andrew Schemmel, Joseph Schemmel and Daniel Schemmel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Marsh Regional Blood Center, in recognition of Jack's 20 gallon status, 102 E. Ravine Rd., Ste. 200, Kingsport, TN 37660.
