Jack K. Southard, 81, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 7, 2011 at Wellmont Hospice House following a lengthy illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport. He was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett high school and attended ETSU. Jack had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict having been in the 25th Infantry division and had fought at Heart Break Ridge. He later served in the U.S. Army Reserve and was activated during the Berlin Crisis serving in the 639th Transportation Company. Jack was the first employee of Lynn Garden Hardware. He later retired from Tennessee Eastman Company on January 1, 1986 with 31 years of service. He was a member of Charles Dewitt Byrd Post #3382 VFW and had served on the Honor Guard. Jack was a member of Lynn Garden Baptist Church since 1954. He enjoyed making airplanes out of aluminum cans and giving them away.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Blanche Dolen Southard; father Terry Southard; mother-in-law, Muriel Boyer and special cousin, Jean Porter.
Survivors include his wife, of 51 years, Lois Ann Boyer Southard; sister, Mildred Fletcher; close friends, Pat and David Vicars and Sue and Russell Steffey.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at Lynn Garden Baptist Church. The service will begin at 7 pm with Rev. Carl Strickler and Rev. Michael Wrye officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 10, at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be Ted Stout, Jerry Livesay, J. C. Shanks, David Vicars, Russell Steffey, R. L. Carpenter, Tom Gilbert, Ted Wampler, and Jack May.
