Evelyn Virginia "Jackie" Fischer Stone died peacefully on December 27, 2009, at Church Hill Health Care at the age of 91. She was born in Radford, VA, on April 2, 1918, to the former Daisey Belle Brown and her husband, Bertram Plymon Fischer. She was the granddaughter of Kent and Ella Fischer of Radford, VA, and George Pitt and Cora Morefield Brown of Bristol, VA. Jackie was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and a Past-President of the Washington School Parents and Teachers Association. In addition, she was a Past-President of The Women's Auxiliary of Holston Valley Community Hospital and served on the Board of Directors of Holston Valley Community Hospital. Jackie was also a former Executive Assistant of Junior Achievement, a member of the Virginia Club and the Junior League of Kingsport, and taught Literacy at the Kingsport Public Library.
Following her marriage to Bill, Jackie lived her entire life in Kingsport until she entered Church Hill Health Care due to declining health. Jackie was a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed time with her friends, especially at the lake entertaining at breakfast and dinner cookouts. She was an avid golfer and water-skier, a skilled needlepoint artisan, and a veracious reader. Jackie was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Kingsport.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William E. "Bill" Stone; her son, Mark F. Stone, who died at the age of 22; and her daughter-in-law, Brenda G. Stone.
Jackie is survived by her son, George E. Stone and wife Carol Parsons Stone of Kingsport and granddaughters, Jacquelyn F. Stone of Bristol and Courtney E. Stone of Hilton Head, SC; son, Jack W. Stone and wife Barbara Foster of Oakland, CA, and grandson, Emmett F. Stone of Boston, MA; daughter-in-law, Nancy Kingsbury Baart and husband Dick Baart of Rochester, NY, granddaughter, Lynne Houser Overton and husband Tom Overton of Oklahoma City, OK, and great-granddaughter, Amanda Houser Holt and husband Kristopher Holt of Biloxi, MS; granddaughter, Susan Utz and husband David Utz of Macedon, NY, and great-grandchildren, Katie Surace, Adam Surace, Zachary Surace, Samuel Utz and Elijah Utz; granddaughter, Laura Canny Meagher and husband Kevin Meagher of Chicago, IL, and great-grandchildren, Molly, Julia and Dylan; and her cousin, Pat Todd and husband Louis of Nashville. She also leaves behind special friends, Betty and Jerry Ellege of Kingsport.
A memorial service, officiated by The Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle, will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 16, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the memorial service. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter P. Bussart, Jerry E. Ellege, Clay Dubberly, and Louis Todd.
The family wishes to thank Dr. David Franzus for his caring relationship with our mother and the compassionate care he provided for so many years. We would also like to thank John Albright and the very capable and loving staff at Church Hill Health Care for the care and comfort they provided to our mother while she was there.
