James Carroll McDavid

James Carroll McDavid, 91, of Kingsport, died Tuesday evening, June 14, 2016, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Carroll was born in Kingsport where he had resided for most of his life, a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett Class of '42, where he played in the band. He then attended University of Minnesota, where he received his B.S. degree. Carroll was an employee of Blue Ridge Glass, later, American Saint Gobain, retiring after 38 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. After retirement, Carroll played in the 'Has Been Band' and 'Kingsport Community Band' for more than 30 years. He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Michael McDavid in 2006.

Carroll is survived by his wife, Betty Scutt McDavid, of the home; daughters, Pat Welker and husband James, of Garland, TX, Gay Nell Gray and husband Vernon, of Knoxville, and Jane Guy and husband David, of Blountville; son, Dan McDavid and wife Irene, of Woodbridge, VA; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 to 12:30 on Friday, June 17, 2016 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 12:30 with Dr. Joe Greene officiating.

Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
