James Kennie Carter, 75, of Rock Springs Road, Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning following a brief illness.
Kennie was born in Scott County, Virginia and had resided in the Kingsport area since age seven. He was a former employee of the Tennessee Eastman Company where he worked as an iron worker, retiring in 1991. Kennie was a Mason belonging to Masonic Lodge #688. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the United States Marine Corps. Kennie played in several bluegrass bands in the area. He enjoyed bass fishing tournaments and was an avid coon hunter.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Evelyn Bowen Carter.
Survivors include his wife Phyllis Hunt Carter, of the home; daughter, Dr. Ava Carter of Kingsport; son, Jim Carter and wife Glenda of Kingsport; brother, Elmer Dwight Carter of Kingsport; two aunts, Christine Carter of Mt. Carmel and Maude Galbreath of Williamsburg, VA; brother-in-law, John Alvin Hunt and wife Charlotte; nephews, Robby Hunt and wife Kim, Nathan Hunt and wife Susan; great niece and nephew, Abby and Adam Hunt; special cousins, Virginia Carter and Claudia Galloway; several other cousins, and special friends, Ralph and Ann Alvis.
The family will receive friends from 4 - 7 pm Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. A funeral service will be conducted at 7 pm with Rev. Marvin Egan, Rev. Kelly Dykes, officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 2 pm Sunday at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Rev. J.C. Riner officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Posts # 3/265. Pallbearers will be Robby Hunt, Nathan Hunt, Wayne Cowden, Joel Jennings, Michael Manis, and Johnny Nelson. Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Alvis, Paul Carter, Dean Carter, Brett Marcus, M.H. Baines, George Massey, Ralph McMurray and Gale Starnes.
