James "Jim" Hammonds, 62, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, June 20, 2010, after a lengthy illness. Born in Sullivan County, he was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in Viet Nam and completing several duty assignments.
Jim will be missed by all. He never met a stranger. It was his desire that a sports program be implemented in the Bloomingdale community so that any child, regardless of ability or finances, could play ball. After four years and countless man-hours, over 300 children were playing sports. He had also coached children's basketball for several years.
Jim was a self-employed furniture refinisher and cabinet maker. His work has been shipped to many states and several foreign countries. St. Christopher Church and Rev. Maggie were a wonderful part of his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Marla Hammonds McMurray, and his parents, R. C. Hammonds and Bonnie Hammonds MacLellan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Linda Poore Hammonds; a son, Michael Hammonds and wife Nina, of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Justin Williams and Jasmyne Hammonds, also of Virginia Beach, and Emma McMurray of Radford, VA; three sisters, Phyllis Parvin of Canton. GA, Mary Queen and husband, Tom, of Woodstock, GA, and Kathy Ball and husband, Gary, of Kingsport; two brothers, Ken Hammonds and wife, Kathy, of Jasper, GA, and Ron Hammonds and wife, Gayle, of Port Richy, FL; several nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews; and special family members Chris and Jennifer McMurray and daughter, Kaitlyn, Radford, VA.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 584 Lebanon Road, Kingsport, with the Reverend Maggie Zeller and the Reverend Dr. Howard Hess officiating.
Interment will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park, with military rites by American Legion Posts 3/265. Serving as pallbearers will be Chris McMurray, Gary Ball, Wayne Neal, Adam White, Bobby Brooks, Brian Bourne, Larry McClintock, and Johnny Peters.
