James E. Harman, Sr., 81, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2022. Born in Hurley, VA, on December 11, 1940, he graduated from Grundy High School in 1959 and attended Carson Newman and The University of Richmond. He married Modesta Perez on December 9, 1962, in San Sebastian Puerto Rico. Jim was a veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force for five years. Following his time in the military, he worked in sales for ITT Tele-Communications in San Juan. He retired from Tele-Optics Inc. after 20 years of service. Jim was a member of Kiwanis in Puerto Rico. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobert Harman and Maude Justice Harman; son, Jimmy Harman; and several brothers and one sister.
Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Modesta Harman; daughter, Pamela Norris (Rick); grandchildren, Tiffany Willeford (Austin) and Heather Slagle (Ricky); great-granddaughter, Sophie Louise Willeford; brother, Robert F. “Bob” Harman; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Graveside services will be at 1p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military honors by The American Legion Posts #3/265.
Pallbearers will be friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
