James A. Hicks of Kingsport, Tennessee, passed away Friday, February 22, 2008, after an extended illness.
He was born May 19, 1935, in Arcadia, Tennessee, and resided most of his life in this area. James served four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict in South Korea and worked with the Office of Special Investigations. After receiving his Bachelors Degree from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in Cookeville, Tennessee, and his Masters Degree from the University of Mississippi at Oxford, he taught at Sullivan High School from 1960 to 1977. James served as assistant principal at Central High School from 1977 to 1990. He had long been active in community work and assisted in the building of Bloomingdale Ruritan Club where he continued as an active member for many years. He was also an active member in the Arcadia Community Club.
James was an avid farmer and had a lifelong love of gardening and raising cattle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hassell H. Hicks, Sr. and Frances Seneker Hicks; sister, Julia Anne Patterson; and brother, Hassell H. Hicks, Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby White Hicks of the home; two sons, Tony Hicks and wife Sharon of Dunlap, Tennessee, Dave Hicks and wife Janet; and three grandsons, Daniel Hicks, Tommy Hicks, and Ben Hicks. He is also survived by a brother, Joe Fred Hicks and wife Janie; sister, Mary Ellen Wright and husband, Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
At his request, the body will be cremated with burial at a later date at Mountain Home National Cemetery.
