James Jim Cecil Lay, Sr., 85, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Saturday, August 27, 2011. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, who was very compassionate and humble. Jim loved to be with his family and was always there for anyone that needed him. He will be missed by all of his family.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bernice Lay, parents Kate and Jake Lay, Sr., sister, Vinada Brickey, and brothers Bill Lay and Ernest Lay.

He is survived by daughters, Penny Quillen and husband Carl of Mt. Carmel and Robin Sindon and Gary Bond of Kingsport; son James Jimmy C. Lay, Jr. and wife Debra of Memphis; nine grandchildren, Tara King and husband Todd, Tiffany Tilley and husband Matthew, Amber Quillen, Ashley Quillen, Nicholas Quillen, Marissa Quillen, Holly Housewright and husband Clay, Ashley McBee and husband Toney, Nikki Lay and Jason Lay; 13 great-grandchildren, Bailey Morgan, Nikolas King, Khloe King, Alyssa Tilley, Ayden Tilley, Alexis Tilley, Taylor Quillen, Addisyn Quillen, Jackson Cruze, Hayden Housewright, Jacob Housewright, Hunter McBee, and Chase McBee; sister, Joann Snapp; brothers, J. D. Buck Lay, Jr., Roy Lay and John Lay; and special caregiver Teresa Breeding.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 30, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday with Stephen Lay officiating.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Holston View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Matthew Tilley, Clay Housewright, Toney McBee, Bailey Morgan, Jason Lay, Donnie Snapp, Ronnie Brickey and Gregory Brickey. Honorary pallbearers will be Todd King and Terry New.

The family requests donations may be made in Jim's honor to the Vernon Heights Baptist Church building fund, 2574 Russell St., Kingsport, TN 37660 or to Bloomingdale Baptist Church, 3220 Bloomingdale Pike, Kingsport, TN 37660.
