James E. "Jim" Miller

James E. "Jim" Miller, 82, of Kingsport, died Saturday January 1, 2011, after an extended illness. He was born in Kingsport, where he resided all of his life. Jim was a 1947 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and attended ETSU. He retired from Congressman James H. Quillen's office in 1997 after 34 years of service as his field representative. He enjoyed raising cattle and attending horse shows. Jim was a member of Mountain View UMC, an active member of the National, State, and local Republican Party, past member of the Kingsport Jaycees and Kingsport Kiwanis Cosmopolitan Club.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Blanche Miller; brother, John D. Miller; and son-in-law, Steve Rose.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia Haltom Miller of Kingsport; three children, Cathy Rose of Kingsport, Mary Clair King and husband Robin of Kingsport, and J. David Miller and wife Linda of Kingsport; nine grandchildren, Curt Rose and wife Jenny, Matt King and wife Sarah, Sam King and fiancé Kelly Bessent, Chris Rose and wife Jill, Justin King, Alex King, Caty Rose, Nathan Miller, and Susanne Miller; one great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Rose; sister-in-law, Frances Miller and three nieces.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 4, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View UMC with Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Graveside services will follow at Gunnings Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jim's grandchildren; honorary pallbearers will be Harry Boggs, Ralph Cole, Mack Cooper, Bill Jenkins, Jack King, John Miller, E.G. Moody, P.T. Nottingham, Toby Odom, Tommy Olterman and Joe White.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mountain View UMC, 4405 Orebank Road, Kingsport, TN 37664 or to the Salvation Army 505 Dale St. Kingsport, TN 37660, or to the charity of one's choice.
