James L. Powers, Jr., 72, of Kingsport, after a noble struggle with complications resulting from a recent injury, joined his departed family members on Friday evening, August 28, 2009.
Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Jim was the second of three children born to James L. Powers, Sr. and Ruth A. Sanders Powers. As a young man growing up in New England, he worked in his family's bakery and spent summers at Waterman's Lake where he met Eleanor Brown, who would become his wife of 51 years. During the first years of marriage, Jim and Eleanor welcomed four children into their family. Jim went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps and worked in the textile industry.
In 1976, Jim and Eleanor moved their family to Kingsport when Jim joined Holliston Mills in Church Hill, where he would work for over twenty years. Before retiring, Mr. Powers realized a lifelong dream of owning a business when he purchased the Massey' Dry Cleaners/Clean -N-Save chain from Mrs. Massey of Kingsport. He ran the business for almost twenty years before reaching his "second" retirement in order to enjoy boating on Boone Lake and time with his family in Kingsport.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, James L. Powers III; and two sisters, Beverly Lavoie and Karen Inman.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Powers, Kingsport; his four children, Mark Powers and wife Christiane of Fredrick, Maryland, Kristyn Powers of Kingsport, Scott Powers and wife Mellissa of Kingsport, and Mary Vest Powers of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Sarah Parker and husband Ken, James L. Powers IV, Nicholas Powers and Christopher Powers; and one great-grandson, Rowan Parker.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Father Mike Nolan officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
