James Robert (J.R.) Maddux, age 84, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a period of declining health. Born in Kingsport on May 27, 1933, J.R. was the son of the late Stuart and Mabel Maddux. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School and attended Carson-Newman University where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree. He received his Master's Degree from Union College and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves.

J.R. retired from Sullivan Central High School. He enjoyed 24 years of retirement after a lengthy career as a teacher and coach with several local high schools including Holston High School, a place very dear to his heart.

He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who enjoyed playing golf and watching sports on TV, especially college football.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Lee Maddux; his brothers, William, Cecil, Festus, Freddie Lee and George Glen; his sisters, Evelyn, Mary and Nannie; and his stepson, Benjamin D. Bowden.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Bowden Maddux; daughter, Shaun St. Onge and husband, Tim; and their children, Jay and Lauren of Atlanta, GA; sister, Beverly Thetford and husband, Jim of Kingsport; stepchildren, Grady C. Moore, III and wife, Donna; Don K. Moore and fiancée, Melissa Morrison, Amy M. Cody and husband, R. Wayne Cody; and John C. Moore and wife, Kim; and eleven step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, all of Kingsport.

The family will host a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at Colonial Heights Baptist Church with Dr. Greg Burton and Pastor David Salley officiating. A eulogy will be provided by Jay St. Onge. Family visitation will be after the service at the church.

J.R.'s wishes were to be cremated. The inurnment service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday at Oak Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Colonial Heights Baptist Church, 108 Colonial Heights Rd., Kingsport, TN 37663.
