James Luther "Sam" Smith, 82, of Kingsport, the last spoke of the late Luther and Eva Light Smith, went home May 21st to make the family wheel complete. He departed at 2:20 p.m. from Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born February 14th, 1928, and attended Gospel Mission Churcha"where he was known as "The Candy Man".
As you travel day be day on the many roads or park in parking lots all over Tennessee, think of Sama"as he was probably the one who cut the grade. He was a master grader for several different companies over the past 48 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Eva Light Smith; one brother, Jake Smith; five sisters, Ethel Archer, Loretta Wilcox, Estelle Light, Betty Jackson, and Evelee Barrett.
He is survived by one daughter, Connie Sue and husband Denzil Dykes; two sons, Ronnie and wife Terri Smith, Danny and wife Terri Smitha"all of Greeneville; five grandchildren, Sherri Rose, Monica Willis, Jason Smith, Jonah Smith, and Jesse Smith; great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Kyle Carroll.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Sunday at Gospel Mission Church, or anytime at the home of DiAnna and Pete Smith. Services will be Monday at 2 pm at the church with Rev. Lewis Meade, Rev. Shelton Meade and Preacher Pete Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Light Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Darrell Wilcox, Gary Light, Roy Dolen, Danny Love, Marty Jackson, David Bright, Johnny Roberts, George Bernard, L.B. Jackson and Kyle Carroll. Honorary Pallbearer will be Kyle Chase.
