James David "Dave" Varney, age 57, of Church Hill, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 15, 2013, at his residence. Born in Patterson, WV on April 24, 1956, a son of the late Elmer and Emil Justice Varney, he had lived in this area most of his life. Dave was an over-the-road trucker and a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in the 82nd Airborne.
Dave married Janet Dunn on September 22, 1982. He will be remembered as a loving husband, dad, papaw, brother, son and friend who liked to fish, camp and rappelling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Laremy Varney and Timothy Varney.
Dave is survived by his wife of 32 years, Janet Dunn Varney; two sons, Jason David Varney and wife, Christina of Gate City, and Gabriel Varney of Church Hill; five grandchildren, Braedon Varney, Jillian Varney, Chloe Varney, Chandler Varney and Malachi Varney; step-mother, Caroline Varney of Kingsport, TN; mother-in-law, Marlene Dunn of Kingsport; siblings, Elmer Douglas Varney and wife, Teresa of Knoxville, Donald Lee Varney and wife, Mary of Kingsport, Aaron Lee Bowles of Maryland, and Jean Lou Bowles of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Tony Woods of Church Hill, Dante Insalago of Church Hill and Dennis Youngblood of Kingsport.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 7:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport with Rev. Jackie Hilton officiating. Reception of friends will follow at the funeral home and at other hours at the residence of his mother-in-law.
