James Hammond, 74, Kingsport, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at his home. He was born in Dickenson County, VA but had lived in this area most of his life. Jim graduated from Ervinton High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and retired from Tennessee Eastman Company after more than 30 years in the research division. Jim was a very fun guy to be around. He enjoyed life and lived it without regrets. He could always tell a great story and never missed an opportunity to travel and enjoy others.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Lessie C. Dameron Hammond, and brother, William J. "Bill" Hammond.
Jim is survived by his brother, Lonnie L. Hammond and wife, Peggy of Blountville; sisters, Sarah S. Hammond of Palm Coast, FL and caregiver, Susan H. Beth of Blountville; brother, Thomas L. "Tom" Hammond of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to give a special thanks to WMA Kingsport Hematology/Oncology and Sun Crest Hospice.
There will be an informal gathering to honor Jim from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Saturday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Friends are asked to dress casually. At 12:00 pm we will stop and take a moment for his nephew, Rev. Todd Crosby, to say a few words.
