James Amzy White Jim, 74, died August 25, 2012, at his home surrounded by loving family after a 25-year battle with thyroid cancer and its metastases.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Lucile White of Etowah, TN. Also preceding him in death was his sister, Julia White McClary and her son Robbie McClary, both of Etowah. He also lost a daughter, Lia Carin White, in 2000.
Jim was born and spent his childhood in Etowah, TN. He graduated from Tennessee Tech and moved to Kingsport to work for Eastman Kodak. He retired in 1993 after 33 years of service in Industrial Relations.
In his younger years, he was active in the Kingsport Jaycees, working on the soapbox derby and the Miss Kingsport Pageant. He was President of the Kingsport Safety Council when the traffic lights on Center Street were synchronized to allow for traffic to flow efficiently through the city.
He learned to play golf in college and loved the game and the competition between himself and his golf buddies. He won many prizes and awards playing golf. His most important award was probably placing sixth in a Tennessee State Senior's Tournament. He also had a lot of holes-in-one, at least fourteen. Jim was proud to have been on the Founder's Committee that built The Crossings golf course near Jonesborough.
Jim's grandchildren were number one with him, and he loved spending time with them. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed working in his yard. He was a Christian.
Jim is survived by his wife of 29 years, Laura Crawford White. He is also survived by his sons, James Mitchell White and wife, Johanna, of Kingsport and Michael Scott White of Greeneville, TN. In addition, his step-daughter, Shelley King lives in Knoxville, with husband David and Jim's grandsons, Alex and Evan King. Also, left behind was his beloved bichon, Maggie.
There will be a memorial service at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, with Pastor Alan Buckles officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jim's memory to The Crossings Golf Club, 2585 Highway 81 North, Jonesborough, TN 37659 or to Kingsport Animal Shelter, 2141 Idle Hour Road, Kingsport TN 37660.
