James B. (Jim) Whiten, 90, Kingsport, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2020. He was born on December 25, 1929, in Kingsport to John J. and Nannie Belle Larkey Whiten.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Delores B. Whiten; son, Ed Whiten and wife Gwen, Kingsport; daughter, Debbie Whiten, Franklin, TN, and her fiance' Rick Jackson; grandson, Michael Darnell; great-grandchildren, Emile, Zachary and Carson Darnell; brother, Wayne Whiten and wife Ruby; sister, Judy Whiten Brooks.
Mr. Whiten was a proud, 1948 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Upon retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, he began a career in Hotel Management in the hospitality industry. He managed properties in Kingsport, Virginia, and Franklin TN and a Past- President of the Tennessee Ramada Managers Association. He was a member of First Christian Church, Kingsport.
Jim was a Past-President of the Scott County Chamber of Commerce which honored him as Citizen of the Year in 1997. He was active in Rotary Clubs in Kingsport and Scott County and named a Paul Harris Fellow by both organizations. He served on many community boards including Holston Valley Healthcare, Inc., Holston Valley Healthcare Foundation, Inc. and Mountain Empire Community College Foundation. He was Past-President of Goodwill Industries Tenneva, Southwest Blue Ridge Highlands, Inc. and Employers Advisory Committee of the Virginia Employment Commission.
The family of James B. Whiten is greatly appreciative of the care given by Asbury Steadman Hill and Amedisys Hospice. He was so blessed by their care.
There will be a private family interment at the Veterans Administration Cemetery. Mountain Home.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimers Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice in memory of James B. Whiten.
